RAPID UK Search and Rescue

O.K., so how can I justify putting this in my we site?

On a very serious note, ‘search and rescue’ is by no means an holistic therapy however the HOPE that the RAPID UK operational members bring to a disaster area is healing manifested. My sister Trisha and I are support members in RAPID and during the Pakistan earthquake in October last year we played a part in manning the phones in RAPID H.Q,. in Gloucester. This was a truly amazing experience. Outlined below are the events with regards to the Pakistan deployment

URGENT NOTICE 17th October 2005

RAPID sent 2 teams to the devastated earthquake disaster area in Pakistan, 1 team of 15 operational members flew out Saturday lunchtime (8th Oct) and a second team of 11 flew out Saturday evening.

Within an hour of arriving, team 1 were involved in search and resucue, and had rescued 2 people within the first 2 hours. Rapid rescued a total of 7 people from a demolished block of flats in Islamabad.

Both teams are now home.

RAPID UK exists to provide experienced disaster response personnel anywhere in the world when required and to facilitate sustainable training and mitigation programmes in disaster prone countries.

RAPID is a charity formed in 1996 to meet the growing international need. As a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), its members volunteer their skills and time.

RAPID UK members are amongst the most experienced disaster response personnel in the UK and are highly respected around the world.

RAPID UK's dedicated volunteers have amassed extensive experience in many kinds of disasters including: earthquakes in Armenia, Iran, Philippines, Japan, Colombia, Turkey'92, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Georgia, Turkey '99 and India; plus training, assessments and logistics in many countries including Peru, Tanzania and Thailand: Mitigation and Preparedness projects in many countries including Peru and Albania.

RAPID UK is the only UK member of United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG)

All RAPID UK volunteers undergo a thorough 18-month training programme, and once trained and assessed (a 5day exercise for overseas duties) the RAPID UK volunteers have the choice of specializing in one of the specialist units of Canine Support, Medical, Marine Rescue or Assessments.

The total cost to initially train, equip and continue training an operational member and search dog is approximately £29,570.
