Reiki Regulation History

Reiki Voluntary Self Regulation

Voluntary Self Regulation

Click here to see my understand of the history of VSR

Voluntary Self Regulation is just that - Voluntary.

If you wish to  continue in the way you currently do with your Reiki then that is your choice.  Voluntary Self Regulation is not looking to change this.

Should you wish to offer Reiki treatment to members of the public then the time may come when establishments such as the NHS may wish to see accreditation and that is where the voluntary self regulation comes in.

It is not the Reiki and the Spirit of Reiki that is being accredited - it is the mechanics of how you give the Reiki in a professional setting that is.  The RRWG advise that 'Accreditation is the process of official recognition by a specified body of a course or an individual, having satisfied certain criteria; the purpose being to enable public access to safe and competent practitioners.'

For those of you who do not want to go down this path then as I have said before, the choice is yours.

Should you be looking to offer your Reiki services in a formal professional capacity then please read on!

As advised on the RRWG web site

"CONCERNS OVER REGULATORY STRUCTURE PROPOSED BY PRINCES TRUST

During 2007 the RRWG has been part of a group looking at a federal (ie multi-therapy) approach to self-regulation. This has been called the Federal Working Group and is held under the auspices of the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health. The RRWG was excluded from the September and October meetings and therefore unable to input its views directly at this key time. The Working Group has issued a Progress Report. The RRWG has a number of concerns with what is being proposed and following an emergency meeting, has sent a letter detailing these to the Prince's Trust and to the working group. It was agreed that these concerns should be posted on the website in the interests of transparency"

On 6th November the RRWG held  a meeting to discuss the letter sent to the RRWG expressing concerns over the proposed FWG (Federal Working Group) model for the voluntary self regulation of Reiki.  A copy of this letter can be seen by following the link at the bottom of this page)
An unsatisfactory response has been received from the Princes Foiundation for Intergrated Health Federal Working Group and the RRWG has unanimously agreed not to follow this approach to VSR.  Other options to VSR are being explored.

This is how it stands at January 2008

2007 ended with a number of prominent therapies rejecting the Prince of Wales Foundation for Integrated Health (PFIH) federal approach (FWG) to self-regulation.

(One very positive outcome of the discussions was to see how all the Reiki Organisations on the RRWG unanimously voted to leave the PFIH – FWG.  All felt that it would not be to the benefit of Reiki to continue along this road.  This year has started with looking at our options to progress the Governments thoughts on VSR for professional practitioners.)

It seems that in the U.K. our law states that anyone can do anything as long as there is not law to say that they can’t.  This implies that anyone can be a Reiki Practitioner unless there is a law that says they can’t.  Voluntary self regulation is still that – voluntary so a Reiki Practitioner does not need to be registered until a law comes along that says they do.

But; I believe that in the not too distant future the Government will say that professional therapists/practitioners will be subject to regulation and that is why we in the RRWG want to try to ensure that the Reiki community have a say as to what that regulation is – if you see what I mean.  Imagine if it becomes statutory, and run by people who do not ‘know’ Reiki – people will be looking for Reiki on ‘the black market’!!!!!  I know this is a very silly idea but the more involvement we can have in the VSR the more beneficial it will be for Reiki.

However; in saying all of that I personally think that there will be Reiki practitioners giving Reiki to their established clientele with no thought to VSR.  The VSR will only involve those practitioners who want to work in institutions such as medical establishments, health clubs, hospices etc.  Who knows?

I have attached details of the progress of VSR and CAM.  You will see that I believe, currently, the GRCCT is the best way forward.

(Going forward to be in a register it is looking like a person will either need to be in a professional association who has code of ethics/conduct etc. and there is a checking system to ensure credentials, or will apply direct to a body holding a register but this method will be very expensive and credentials will still need to be checked.)

As a reminder the requirement for a ‘professional’ practitioner is almost certain to be face to face attunements, accredited lineage, a stated number of hours practice etc. and continual professional development.  If any of you feel that you will want to be ‘professional’ there are a number of associations who do offer this.

(As an aside TRC is open to all Reiki Practitioners and does have codes in place and all credentials are checked.)
